Sharath Raj (Graduate | MS Business Analytics)
Dreams do come true. And every sacrifice to make it happen is worth it. Admittedly, though, our pursuits and the expectations we have for ourselves can become overwhelming at times. I encourage my peers and the students who may follow in my footsteps to always remember to have faith and remember that “Dreams do come true. But only if you work for it.”
Choosing to follow my dreams while being away from family was once a scary thought but my mother encouraged me to pursue my dreams and become successful. When I moved to West Haven, Connecticut, in January 2021, I was excited as it was always my dream to study in the United States of America, and I was making this a reality.
In graduate school it was a challenge managing my studies, internship, and my graduate assistantship. Learning & working on projects in PowerBI played a great role in my internship as a BI analyst. In our Supply Chain class, we had interesting interactions with peers and professors which were like real-world business discussions.
I have always been passionate about starting my own company and becoming a leader in the defense and space industry. The Business Analytics program offered me opportunities to gain theoretical and practical learning. One such practical opportunity was to lead a project focused on understanding the impact of international trade policies on business strategy.
Since arriving in the U.S., I have had the opportunity to travel and explore different cities and encounter different cultures. The diversity on campus at the University of New Haven also gave me a wonderful opportunity to makes friends with international students from around the world. I was fortunate enough to be the Graduate Assistant (GA) at the Dean’s office, where I learned a lot about administrative work and grading responsibilities, and to appreciate and respect the different cultures of my colleagues and peers.
While living and learning in the United States, I adapted to a more-independent lifestyle, which, initially, was difficult. I had a lot more freedom, but I kept reminding myself that with this freedom comes great responsibilities.
The University of New Haven’s campus for graduate business students is in a former corporate headquarters, and gives a real workplace feel and experience and is well-equipped to facilitate students’ educational needs. The Pompea College of Business dean’s office, other faculty and staff, and my friends have all made the University of New Haven my home away from home. While these two years have been a great learning experience, I am excited for the next chapter in my journey.
